Shang Hai Theatre Academy
Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) is a comprehensive university of performing arts, with the focus on theatre training and studies and a history of almost 70 years.Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and reporting to the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, STA is one of the best art institutions of higher education in China.
On December 1st, 1945, the predecessor of Shanghai Theatre Academy – Shanghai Municipal Experimental Theatre School – was founded by well-known educators Gu Yuxiu and famous dramatists Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi, Huang Zuolin, Wu Renzhi at 1844 Sichuan Road, with Xiong Foxi as the first president.
In 1956 the school was formally renamed as Shanghai Theatre Academy as an art university under the Ministry of Culture. In June 2002, the Performing Arts School of Shanghai Normal University, the Shanghai Chinese Opera School and the Shanghai Dance School were incorporated into Shanghai Theatre Academy. The teaching experience over six decades has formed the rich art atmosphere and inclusive cultural environment in the academy.
Shanghai Virtual Performing Art Lab
自2012年起实验室已连续主办3届“新媒体演艺创新国际专家研讨会”，与来自美国MIT Media Lab、EMPAC（Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center）、西班牙La Fura dels baus、奥地利ARS ELECTRONICA Center、德国、法国、北京、上海、广州、香港、台湾等国家、地区的杰出新媒体演出艺术家、学者进行交流与讨论。

Shanghai Virtual Performing Art Lab was founded in December 2004 with sponsorship from the Shanghai Scientific Commission, as well as special financial support from the Shanghai Education Commission and Ministry of Culture.
With comprehensive, art-related resources supplied by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the Lab prides itself on training talent in the creative, creation, production and management industries, as well as conducting innovative reforms to upgrade artistic modes. The Lab also commits itself to promoting the advancements in creation via clustered innovations. By integrating artistic content within scientific and technological methods, the Lab adheres to the principles of combining art and science, and content and technology, with the utilization of new media, virtual reality, three-dimensional interaction and the digital technologies of the information-based Internet.

Since 2012, the Lab has been hosting three annual New Media Performance International Innovation Symposiums. This has offered great opportunities for artists, scholars and experts to exchange ideas. They come from the American MIT Media Lab, EMPAC (Experimental Medial and Performing Arts Center), La Fura dels Baus, Austrian ARS ELECTRONICA Center, Germany, France, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Taiwan and so on.
