[The Star] Musical’s message of joy and kindness

KUALA LUMPUR: Guan Yin Pu Sa: A Musical is all set to warm the hearts of Malaysians with its message of joy and kindness when it opens next week at Istana Budaya.

The musical is jointly organised and presented by Yayasan Guan Yin and the Shanghai Theatre Academy together with Resorts World Genting.

“We want to spread a positive message such as of love and understanding through this musical,” said Datuk Tan Swee Lai, the show’s producer and foundation secretary-general.

Genting Malaysia Bhd’s chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay presented a RM1mil cheque to Tan to help with production costs.

“It is important for us to always preserve and promote our cultural values,” said Lim.

“As such, we have chosen to commence our 50th anniversary celebration with a corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at promoting compassion, love and solidarity.”

The musical, inspired by Buddhist scriptures, will highlight the importance of kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity via four heart-warming tales.

Boasting a cast of 129 actors and singers from China and Malaysia, the RM20mil show is directed by Prof Yu Xiao Xue from the Beijing Dance Academy with local composer and songwriter Chow Kam Leong as the music director.

Chow, who is also Yayasan Guan Yin’s culture and arts bureau head, wrote and composed all 15 songs for the show.

Yayasan Guan Yin had previously staged Magic Mirror The Musical, Qian Shou Qiam Yan and Thousand Arms Thousand Eyes.

The show will be conducted in Mandarin with English subtitles.
